Thandie Newton has two daughters – Ripley, 11, and Nico, 7 – with her director husband Ol Parker. The actress recently talked about her unconventional parenting methods – she says she has no hard and fast rules when it comes to discipline, but instead tries to teach her children with her own behavior. “I try to be a mirror instead of impressing myself on them all the time,” she explained. “I take responsibility for my actions, explain to them, ‘The reason I’m rushing is’ or ‘It’s not your fault I’m upset.’ “But if I come across even remotely annoyed with them, I do get, ‘All right mommy’ and I think, ‘Jesus, you have no idea what real rage is.’” The RocknRolla star also talked about her daughters’ penchant for “dressing up” and being in the spotlight. “They’re into styling more than fashion. Dressing up. I wasn’t like that when I was younger. Not at all,” she says. “I was in a lot of denial about my appearance when I was younger so I certainly wouldn’t have wanted to draw attention to myself. Maybe I’m making up for it now.” |

Thandie Newton was “tickled” when she was signed as the face of Olay. The star was named as the celebrity ambassador for the skincare brand earlier this year. Thandie was thrilled to represent the beauty giant because it reminded her of her youth. “[I was] tickled because Oil of Ulay is what my mother used: that was the smell of being a woman,” she told Style magazine. Thandie is famed for her ever-elegant style. The British actress thinks fashion is a way of expressing your creativity, and revels in making her own wardrobe choices. “Oh, I love fashion. For me, it’s about being a girl and having fun,” she said. “Being a person and having fun. And celebrating creativity and life.” Thandie is regularly seen wearing British labels. The 39-year-old beauty has revealed her motivations for doing so. “[My favourite designers are] Giles [Deacon], Jonathan Saunders, Stella [McCartney] and Erdem. People say to me, ‘You’re so good, the way you champion British designers.’ And I’m like ‘Are you kidding? I want to look good.’ And, also, I want to look now and new,” she said. Thandie has two daughters with husband Ol Parker – Ripley and Nico. The stunning star loves that her girls are creative, because she wasn’t always so experimental. “They’re into styling more than fashion. Dressing up,” she revealed. “I wasn’t. Not at all. I was in a lot of denial about my appearance when I was younger, so I certainly wouldn’t want to draw attention to myself. Maybe I’m making up for it now. Yes, I think I am.” |

Thandie Newton turned to books when she couldn’t get attention from boys. The 39-year-old actress insists she wasn’t popular with the opposite sex when she was growing up so spent her spare time reading romantic novels to “make sense” of the feelings she had. She explained: “I lost myself in reading as a teen. Wasn’t the girl who boys saw themselves being involved with; I lived in a small town and you weren’t going to go out with the black girl. “So these sweeping stories taught me about love and romance. Reading was the only way I could make sense of the hormones coursing through my body.” Thandie also admitted she has learned a lot from the dark times in her life. Discussing why she loves Pema Chodron’s book ‘When Things Fall Apart’, she told Britain’s Elle magazine: “I read this at a difficult time and found it incredibly comforting. “The moment Chodron realised she had to make a change in her life was when her husband told her he’d been having an affair and was leaving her. The rage she felt was so powerful, it made her see that she needed to temper it with compassion. “But it was that rage that led her to a huge epiphany of love and that is certainly something I’ve encountered in my life. “The most painful and difficult times have been the key to wisdom, understanding and deep love.” |
