Thandie Newton’s Schizophrenic Career

Thandie Newton thinks her movie career has been “schizophrenic”.

The 38-year-old star – who starred as a jilted lover in comedy film ‘Run Fatboy Run’ and an underhand accountant in crime motion picture ‘RocknRolla’ – believes it is best to vary her acting roles and try her hand at a number of characters.

She said: “As an actor I always try to do as many diverse roles as possible. I’d generally describe my career as a bit schizophrenic to be honest, because I never seem to be doing the same thing.

“I think it’s the best way to be though, to play as many different roles as possible.”

Thandie – who stars alongside Johnny Miller and Noel Clarke in new DVD movie ‘Huge’, which sees the pair play a comedy double act – thinks she became “really funny” by learning how comedy works when training for the role of talent agent Kris in the film, because she does not think people have to be naturally humorous to be amusing.

She added: “Comedians are of course very funny people but they are so different when they’re backstage and they’re not in a funny mood.

“They’re always very focused and concentrate intently on every little thing. People don’t realise that you don’t have to be naturally funny, it’s actually something you’ve got to work at and then you become really funny.

“That was a real revelation and really helpful in my research for this role.”

The movie – which also stars actress Tamsin Egerton and comedian Ben Miller – tells the story of a feuding comedy duo Warren (Johnny) and Clark (Noel) who travel around London trying to make it big by doing comedy gigs, but they soon discover the cut-throat comedy circuit is incredibly difficult to break into.

‘Huge’ will be released on DVD by Independent Distribution on 3 October.
